I’m not good at math. I had a terrible encounter with my grade school teacher that completely had a negative impact on my learning ability related to math. Wish this never happened, and do understand the power of math (the universal language).
I can’t say Math is my favorite subject but it remains a neccessary attribute. I find it amusing though that whenever I sumply replace any object in a math question with money..you know instead of apples..quarters, instead of mike and susy trading pencils, in my head they trade dollars then my answer usually turns out right! Algebra was always a challenge until I realized if you follow the rules you will always come out with the correct answer. I have intense respect for Christ, I have seen her working on math problems that look like alien schematics. You go girl!!
I must say that my mother was part of the reason I was able to pick math up so easily. I remember her teaching me how to add and subtract 5’s and 10’s.
My daughter did great last year with Pre-Algebra; never had a grade below 95 but this year with Algebra 1, she struggled. Her grades ranged betwen 77 – 84. Next year is geometry — we are hoping that it will be an easy year.
Thankfully my son improved every marking period in math. His elementary experience varied, and I think it held him back a bit, but he did well overall.
I liked basic math a lot when I was in school, which was decades ago. Algebra was hard to grasp and calculas was totally in another world. I struggled with this in college. As I try to help my daughter with algebra now, all I get is frustration. I thought it would be easy to understand after so many years with patience, maturity and a desire to learn, but still it remains impossible to understand.
As a 7th grader, I did well with Algebra 1/2. My grade never fell below 95. The school year that just ended, I completed Algebra 1, and that was not good for me. The only part of Algebra 1 that I enjoyed was distributive property, adding like terms, factoring, substitution, and elimination. Starting in August 2010, I will be taking Geometry and I heard that this subject was very easy.
I am submitting this for my daughter, Amanda Bell.
As a 7th grader, I did excellent in Algebra 1/2 . My grade never went below 95. This school year I took Algebra 1 and that did not go well at all. However, I did like substitution, elimination, distributive property, and factoring. In August 2010, I will be in the 9th grade and will take Geometry. I have heard that it is easier.
When I was in junior and high school, math was my #1 subject but that was umpteen years ago. I enjoy a lot of basic general mathematics and pre-algebra, but that’s as far as it goes.

Math is great. I love that the answers are finite. Geometry is by far my favorite math subject, followed by Statistics. We use statistics every single moment of every single day, and all product/sales/marketing decisions are based on them. However, like Christa, I do not always like showing other people how to “get” math, the way I or other people “get it”. Either you do, or you don’t. Kinda like a finite math answer..
Hello Christa,
The library was a having a ‘fundraising’ sale. Books ranged from .10 to .75. I found a great book at the library for my daughter. The title is “Elementary & Intermediate Algebra”. It looks brand new! It is in excellent shape and a hard back. I am tempted to start trying to study it myself. 🙂

Thank you for that. Math can get really involved, but it is truly fun once you get it!

I am a great mathmatician until I get to algebra. It stops there! 🙂 So I am really ONLY an expert at basic math.

Most people forget Algebra so easily, I did too after high school.

I was a math wiz in school until the Algebra came along. For the first time, I struggled. I don’t like any math beyond Algebra

I’m really good at everyday general math problems. Geometry not so much.

I am the same, geometry is not my favorite, it tends to bore me.

I love the subject, but do not always like showing other people, especially when they get frustrated. They don’t realize that it takes practice.
